What is the difference between a CNC router and a handheld router?

2023-06-08

Here are some key points to distinguish between a CNC router and a handheld router.

1. Fast working engine frame: A CNC router uses three engines to drive the frame along three axes (X-Y-Z). A hand-held router is accompanied by a single cutting head, which is completely different from a CNC router, which can have up to five cutting heads. In this way, with a CNC router, you can deliver complex woodworking products in large quantities.

2. Precise performance: Hand-held routers may not convey the same level of precision as their CNC counterparts. In a hand-held router, an engine running at 6 to 12 amps sits on a table that slides over the material you are cutting; it extends a bit underneath. These routers tend to lurch and run.

3. Safe and reliable: CNC routers are ideal for cutting hard surfaces to reduce the risk of human error. It is a smart idea to make an empty cut before running the actual cut. Due to the computerised nature of CNC machines, they have a wide preference in woodworking activities where precise items need to be manufactured on a large scale. They are suitable for creating profoundly clear work in a short space of time.

4. Cost-effective: Top of the range CNC routers are perfect for industrial grade applications at a higher cost. However, hand-held routers result in wearing out the router before the ideal time.

In the long run, therefore, a handheld router will cost more to repair than a top-of-the-range CNC router. Although easy and accurate, it ensures that the CNC router machine requires unique training to work and performs well ahead of the handheld router. The CNC router is therefore an ideal choice in terms of both cost and efficiency.
