8 Simple Steps to Maintaining Your CNC Machines

CNC milling machines work hard. They need to be serviced and maintained at all times, otherwise their accuracy decreases and the likelihood of failure increases dramatically. Maintenance is quick and easy, and if performed daily, you'll get better performance, less unplanned downtime and extend the overall life of your machine. Here are a few simple steps you can take to maintain your CNC machine and extend the life of your CNC machine.

1. Keep the machine clean. At the end of each shift, inspect the rack and pinion, ball screws and linear bearings, and remove any debris from around the sensors.

2.Replace worn tools. Damaged or worn collets, cap nuts and tools can affect the quality of your cuts. Machine manufacturers recommend replacing collets every 3-6 months.

3. Check your machine. Check for damaged parts that affect machine performance or employee safety, such as emergency stops.

4. Turn off the machine at the end of the day. Avoid leaving your CNC machine on year-round, as the electronics can get very hot. By turning off the machine, you'll reduce the chance of burning out connectors and ensure that you and your employees are protected from unexpected power surges.

5. Delete old files. Improving the efficiency of your machine should be your number one priority. Make sure old files are backed up on an external drive.

6, Lubricate bearings on time. It is recommended that the bearings be inspected at the end of each shift and lubricated if appropriate.

7. Change vacuum pump oil. Most manufacturers recommend changing the vacuum pump oil after 20,000 hours of use.

8. Replace belts. For machines with drive belts on the drive assembly, be sure to replace the belt every two years.
